A Shift in the Air

Waiting in still warmth
I can hardly imagine
Tomorrow these fields
May have a skim of fresh snow
Falling as the air freezes.

The Dickinson Homestead

I entered your haven
In solitude of rain
It was cheerier in demeanor
Than I had dreamed

In light of autumn trees
Yellow glowing with coals
Of red - or burning hearts -
I found not despair here

But vitality - as shimmering air
Inspiring thought
Through a dream of years
With naught but seconds between

Did I pass you in the hallway?
Or sense you in the spirit of soirée
In the Evergreens, or on the path ~
Perhaps lingering in the sunroom

Delighting in the safe refuge
From the chill autumn day.

Fortress

Engage the flowers
Yet don't miss the fortresses
Found in a fencerow

Hidden

With green tucks and coils
A fairy bridal bouquet
Nestles in the phlox

Raiment

How often flowers make faces
If you look closely
Babies in blankets
Grizzled gnomes
Painted women...
All the excesses
And none of the mundane

Shall we pray?

Tempestuous spring
Flinging sun then frost and hail
A violent whore
You copulate openly
Only to kill your offspring
